Easy DIY No-Sew Tea Towel Project

A Charming and Easy Homemaking Project for new and seasoned homemakers!

If you’re looking for a simple way to add a touch of charm to your kitchen (or whip up a quick/wholesome gift), homemade tea towels, using the no-sew method; are the perfect option! That’s right! Homemade tea towels that you don’t need to sew. Whether you’re a seasoned homemaker or just feeling crafty for the weekend, this no-sew method is beginner friendly and rewarding!

I initially stumbled across this by accident as a needed a tea towel in the kitchen and my others were in the wash. I had bought some fabric that I was planning on sewing into tea towels but hadn’t gotten to it just yet. However…I had prepped the fabric, by measuring and cutting it out. So, out of necessity, I just went and grabbed the fabric and used it to cover something in the kitchen (likely a dough in rising).

I assumed I’d throw it in the wash and then iron out and sew into a proper tea towel. But, to my surprise, this tea towel came out of the dryer with beautifully frayed ends…something I wasn’t planning; if I was going to sew proper hems around the towel.

This is when I decided that I didn’t want a “properly sewn” tea towel. I wanted a rustic styled tea towel!

There really truly isn’t much to this project.

What You’ll Need:

  • cotton fabric
    • I prefer to purchase my fabric from Hobby Lobby as it’s very reasonably priced and they have a wide selection of prints to choose from. Also, they frequently have sales on their fabric up to 40% off the yard price. Check the weekly ad before you go.
  • fabric scissors
    • These fabric scissors are a must! Every homemaker needs a pair of fabric scissors. I have a pair of fiskars fabric scissors and they work very well. Tip: don’t cut anything except fabric with fabric scissors.
  • measuring tape
    • Again another classic homemaker tool. Even if you’re not planning on becoming an avid sewist, having a measuring tape is a practical tool. I have this one and it works great!
  • iron(?)
    • Depending on the fabric you purchase, you may prefer to iron before cutting to ensure precision and correct measurements. Honestly, I’m not that precise on a project like this. That’s the beauty of this project; the ease and simplicity; the beauty of rustic charm.

What To Do:

  1. Choose Your Fabric
    • Pick the fabric you’ll be using for this project. Available at craft stores or you may also like to look for vintage fabric in thrift stores, flea markets, or antique shops. Anything cotton or light and absorbent will work best.
  2. Measure Out the Tea Towels
    • How many tea towels will you be making? You’ll want to consider this before purchasing the fabric to ensure you’ll have enough for your project.
    • A standard tea towel is about 18 inches x 28 inches. But this really harps on what your preference is and the needs of your kitchen.
  3. Cut the Fabric
    • Now you’ll cut out the measurements of the tea towel.
  4. That’s It!!
    • As far as this project is concerned, your tea towel is now complete!
    • I personally prefer to go ahead and throw in the wash for the rustic and frayed, country charm look.
      • any wild or unusually long frays can simply be trimmed.

Why You’ll Love This:

These no-sew tea towels are so quick and easy to make…also noteworthy…very affordable if you’re working on a budget, or simply wanting to be a better steward of your resources.

It’s nearly an instant homemaker’s reward with the turnaround time on this project.
